Not many Houstonians can say they have a barn in their backyard. Ken and Stephanie Mays can make that claim. When the Native Houstonians began searching for reclaimed barn wood to complete a home renovation project, they had no idea they would stumble across “the barn” while visiting friends in Wharton, TX.
There they found an authentic 100-year-old barn waiting to be discovered. The property owner was selling the land, but the barn was standing in the way of the real estate deal closing. When Stephanie suggested getting some of the barn-wood for their home renovation project, the owner told her they would have to take the whole barn. So, they did.
Once dismantled, this beautiful barn has turned into many beautiful things. The aged wood now covers some interior walls of the Mays' renovated 1928 home. Other remnants were used for furniture and outdoor decor. Recently, their attention turned to the original aged corrugated metal roof. Stephanie has carefully selected metal pieces to create one-of-a-kind Texas Flags. Each Texas flag is individually hand-painted using a unique style that allows the age and patina of the metal to shine through. No two are the same.
Her passion has always been to raise funds for worthy causes. One way she has done this is by dedicating 20% of her profits to help fund worthwhile causes. In January 2018, Stephanie’s creations were commissioned by Assist the Officer in Houston, Texas. ATO is an organization dedicated to supporting officers who are critically injured in the line of duty. In the last two years, she has made over 100 custom Texas flags for ATO in Houston. Additionally, numerous donations have been made to help other worthy causes over the years. It is one way she fulfills her passion to give and support those in need.
In April 2020, Stephanie was diagnosed with breast cancer and was faced with numerous unexpected expenses. Once again, she began doing what she loves, making Texas flags. Once the barn materials are gone, well, she will likely look for another barn. Until then, you can purchase your own one-of-a-kind Texas flag from “The Store” on this website. They make great gifts!
Made in Texas. By a Texan. For Texans. And those that wish they were.
A percentage of the profits will continue to be given to others that are in need because that is how she gets through life’s challenges. She gives. She has been doing it for years and she won’t let breast cancer stop her now.
